2001 – Sixty and Sailing – Dani’s Birthday Canal Cruise.

Cold Weather, Warm Hearts, And The Ultimate Birthday Gift – Family.

In April 2001, we decided to pull off a birthday celebration for the books—Yoni’s dad, Dani, was turning 60 in May.
But with Yoni still unable to visit Israel due to lingering debts, the idea of a family reunion in Holland was born.
The plan? To rent a boat big enough for nine people and embark on a canal cruise through the Dutch countryside.
We had Yoni’s parents, his sisters Sigi and Smadi, their partners Alon and Nir, and of course, the three of us—Yoni, Thom, and me.

The moment they arrived, it was clear who Thom’s favorite was: her uncle Nir.
He was the perfect mix of fun and mischief, the breath of fresh air she craved amidst the “serious grown-ups” Yoni and I had become, consumed with work and responsibilities. Nir had her giggling and causing chaos from the get-go, and honestly, it was a joy to watch.

We rented the boat and split the costs, knowing full well that April in Holland is a gamble with the weather.
It didn’t disappoint in that department—it was cold, grey, and drizzly.
But we didn’t let that get in the way of the fun.
We sailed through picturesque little villages, stopping for hot drinks, layering up against the chill, and finding creative ways to entertain ourselves onboard.

Now, packing nine people into a boat for several days could easily have led to emotional fireworks.
But Yoni’s family? They’re the picture of calm, not ones for drama or outbursts—thankfully, they leave that to my side of the family!
Instead, we made the most of it, playing board games, diving into art projects with Thom, and just enjoying each other’s company.

For Dani, this was the perfect 60th birthday gift—surrounded by his children and granddaughter, floating along peaceful canals.
There were no grand gestures or extravagant parties, just the simple joy of family together, creating memories.
And for that, I think we all knew we’d given him something truly priceless.
