2007 – California Dreamin’ – Our Epic California Road Trip.

Road Trip Tales of Nature, Adventure, and One Lucky Negotiation.

After a day of fun and friendship on Chet’s boat, we were primed and ready to embark on our epic California road trip, from San Francisco to San Diego.
Our itinerary was ambitious: Yosemite, Sequoia & Kings Canyon, Death Valley, the Grand Canyon, Joshua Tree, and finally San Diego.
From there, we planned to hit L.A. with stops at Disneyland, Universal Studios, and a breezy ride up the famed Highway 1 back to San Francisco.

But let’s start with Yosemite, where the weather was blissfully perfect, allowing us to savor all those jaw-dropping views.
We kept our hikes short since Thom, our 10-year-old, was about as thrilled about hiking as a cat at a dog show.
But she was an absolute rockstar when it came to posing for photos and adding her own charm to the scenery!

Next, we entered the magical realm of Sequoia and Kings Canyon.
Those colossal trees weren’t just tall—they were wide enough that we actually drove through one.
A short walk among the towering giants reminded us how small we really are. Nature was definitely winning the awe-game!

The next part of the plan involved a visit to the Grand Canyon.
But August in Death Valley without A/C? Even we aren’t that adventurous.
To make matters worse, the RV’s engine decided it needed a break, so we had an unscheduled (and sweltering) stop in Bakersfield to get it fixed.
With time ticking away, we decided to postpone the Grand Canyon for another adventure, heading instead toward Joshua Tree and then on to sunny San Diego.

San Diego was a mixed bag.
Yoni quickly “remembered” his deep aversion to cities, so we cut our visit short after an eye-opening trip to SeaWorld.
Though it was fascinating, there was an unmistakable sadness seeing the animals performing.
So, after one day, we bolted for the “Happiest Place on Earth”—Disneyland!

Four packed days followed, with Disneyland, Hollywood, and Universal Studios feeding our movie-loving souls.
We even went to a pirate-themed dinner show, where Thom was thrilled to cheer on swashbuckling sea fights.
By the time we wrapped up our Hollywood fantasies, we were ready for what felt like the true grand finale: the epic drive up Highway 1.

Highway 1 delivered everything we’d hoped for and more: sea lions, cliff-hugging views, and sunsets that made us want to bottle up California’s beauty forever.
When we rolled back into San Francisco, we couldn’t believe the trip was almost over.

Yoni had masterfully steered our RV through narrow cliffside roads, sprawling coastlines, and endless winding lanes without so much as a scratch.
But, of course, fate had one last twist waiting for us.
At the final fuel stop before returning the RV, we filled up the tank, ready to hit the road back to the rental company.
Maybe it was the rush to be on time, or simply that the road was finally catching up with us, but as Yoni pulled out, he didn’t realize the fuel pump was still connected!

In that exact moment, as if the universe were in on the joke, a colossal truck pulled up right beside us, blocking any chance of backing up or detaching gracefully.
And just like that, our flawless RV record unraveled in a single, surreal moment.
We knew this mishap was going to cost a pretty penny in damages, but we weren’t about to let it cloud the incredible journey we’d just had.

When we returned the RV, Yoni’s master negotiation skills kicked into high gear.
With calm precision, he worked his magic, and to our shock, we not only escaped the fine but got an apology and a partial refund for the RV issues we’d dealt with.
It was the ultimate plot twist, and we left that rental office feeling like champions.

With our last few days left in San Francisco, we toasted to an adventure that had gone sideways and then soared higher than we’d ever expected.
