2020 – Learning to Sew.

Stitching Memories: Learning to Sew with Mom.

It was January 2020, just around my mom’s 76th birthday, when I arrived in Rehovot to spend some time with my parents.

I had no idea it would be my father’s last year. I spent hours watching him paint—his paints moving effortlessly, colors flowing onto the canvas like a language only he understood…

But that’s a story for another time.

This memory? This one is about my mom.

A Sewing Machine, A Lesson, and A Lot of Love

For as long as I can remember, my mom has been sewing.

She sewed our clothes when we were little.
She stitched together pieces of fabric and love, creating her own wardrobe for years.
And through it all, she kept the same
sewing machine—a machine that has been with her for over 50 years and is still going strong, fixing grandkids’ clothes and whatever else needs a little mending.

So, on this visit, I asked her to teach me.

Not because I planned on becoming a tailor, but because I wanted to make something sustainable, reusable, and meaningful—shopping bags created from discarded fabrics I found at home.

From Scraps to Something Useful

Sitting next to her, I learned the rhythm of the machine, the patience of stitching, the small tricks that only years of experience can teach.

It was fun, intimate, and special.

And in the end? I actually made usable bags. Real ones.
Bags that we still use every single week, even five years later.

Thanks, Mom.

For your quiet strength.

For always learning, growing, and staying active.

For teaching me, guiding me, and just being you.
