Empowering Youth to Make a Difference.
At just 14 and 15 years old, our daughter Thom and her friends embarked on a journey to make a difference in the lives of children in underprivileged communities across India and Tanzania.
Their story is a testament to the power of youth, determination, and collective effort.
The Beginning: Building Playgrounds in India
In January 2012, Thom and Jeremy took the stage at one of our training seminars to share their ambitious plan.
They were representing the World Challenge, an organization dedicated to sending young adults to underdeveloped countries to contribute directly to local communities.
Their mission? To raise €3,000 to construct a playground for a school in Kerala, India, which lacked basic recreational facilities.
The children at this school, aged 5 to 12, had no place to play during breaks, making the playground a much-needed addition.
With the goal of raising €500 that evening, the teens ask our participants to support the project.
What happened next was nothing short of inspiring.
The audience, moved by the dedication and passion of these young teens, contributed a WOW amount of €2,812.
The overwhelming generosity not only covered the cost of the playground but also allowed for additional funds to be donated to the school for textbooks and supplies.
Continuing the Mission: Renovating a School in India
Six months later, in July 2012, Thom and her friend Micah returned to the stage of another training to share the next phase of their project: renovating a school’s kitchen and bathrooms in Kerala, India.
This time, they aimed to raise €500-600 to fully equip the kitchen, ensuring that the students had the necessary facilities to prepare meals safely.
The project also included a trek through the tea plantations of southern India, designed to teach the students about responsibility, teamwork, and self-reliance.
Once again, the response was incredible.
The participants donated €2,384.80, far exceeding the kids’ initial goal.
These funds were used to purchase appliances, utensils, and other necessities, with additional money set aside for a future project at another school lacking plumbing and electricity.
Expanding Their Reach: Empowering Girls in Tanzania
By December 2012, the youngsters had shifted their focus to Tanzania, where they aimed to support the Maasai Girls Lutheran Secondary School.
This boarding school provides a rare opportunity for girls in Tanzania, where education is often inaccessible for young women.
Thom and her friend Casey presented their goal of raising €5,000 to buy school supplies, fund a safari trip for the girls, and potentially start a larger project, depending on the success of their fundraising.
True to form, the audience rallied behind them, raising €3,355.
This allowed the team to not only meet their initial objectives but also to dream bigger, considering projects like building water tanks to provide clean drinking water for the school.
Reflections on Impact and Growth
Through these experiences, Thom and her friends have learned invaluable lessons about leadership, responsibility, and the impact one can have on the world, even at a young age.
Their journey from collecting small donations to targeting large-scale projects in foreign countries serves as a powerful reminder that age is not a barrier to making a difference.
These initiatives have not only transformed the lives of the children they set out to help but have also shaped Thom and her peers into conscious, empathetic young leaders.
They’ve proven that with passion, determination, and the support of a community, significant change is possible.
