Carrots of Joy – Our Balcony Gardening Adventure.
We had a dream of moving to live on an island for years. Living on an island is a whole different vibe. Maybe it’s the idea that the coast is always just a short drive away or the comforting embrace of being surrounded by the sea. Whatever it is, island life has a certain magic, especially for city folks like us.
So, the plan was hatched: move to an island paradise once our daughter Thom graduated. Sunny was a non-negotiable (sorry, Canada!), and a small house with a garden for our golden years sounded perfect.
Then we stumbled upon Casa Alegria. This place…wow. It was bigger than our vision, sure, but it whispered promises of island bliss.
We knew then—this was it—time to dream a little bigger! The property was a blank canvas, a slope begging for transformation.
We envisioned a Garden of Eden, a permaculture paradise bursting with delicious self-sufficiency.
Oh boy, were we in for a wild ride! Turns out, creating an Eden isn’t exactly a walk in the park (more like a scramble up a rocky hillside!).
We made every mistake in the book (and probably a few new ones!), but hey, that’s how you learn, right?
Slowly, we started to understand the language of the land – the whispers of the soil, the secrets of the trees. We became students of nature, learning to read its signs and respond with care.
Nearly 800 fruit trees found a home on our property, all planted with the dream of a permaculture paradise.
But our terrain proved a bit…challenging for the textbook approach. So, we decided to experiment further.
Enter our balcony – a tiny oasis where we embraced the concept of square-foot gardening.
This balcony bonanza turned out to be a smash hit! For a while, our little pots were overflowing with fresh veggies, a constant source of pride and delicious meals.
It was a revelation for city folk like us – harvesting our own food, straight from balcony to plate.
It fueled our passion for the Garden of Eden project even more!
This miniature balcony garden sustained our family of two (well, Yoni and me) for almost a year. Then, things got interesting. Our little “family” blossomed into a vibrant community of 10, thanks to all the amazing volunteers who joined our mission.
That’s when our balcony bounty graduated to a full-fledged veggie patch with raised beds, taking root on the property itself.
Just look at that grin on Yoni’s face in the photo – pure harvest-time joy!
Every bite was a testament to our journey, a delicious reminder that even the wildest dreams can take root with a little sweat, a lot of heart, and a whole lot of learning along the way.
