How Planting Trees for the Future Can Save the Planet.
There are two types of farmers in this world: vegetable farmers and fruit tree farmers.
The first group is busy with quick gains and short-term strategies, while the latter invests in the present to reap rewards for years to come with little work.
This metaphor extends far beyond agriculture – into our careers, finances, health, and relationships.
And personally, I’ve always been a “fruit tree farmer,” in both the metaphorical and literal sense.
When we decided to transform our property in Tenerife into our own version of Eden, my focus was clear: a food forest, the ultimate embodiment of long-term thinking.
This wasn’t just about planting trees; it was about creating an environment that could sustain itself for years to come, benefiting both us and the countless creatures who call it home.
But this goes beyond our personal paradise.
It’s a blueprint for addressing one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change.
Many people look to governments, corporations, or international organizations to take action against this global crisis.
But what if the power to create real change lies with each of us?
What if the solution is as simple as planting a tree?
When we first arrived in Tenerife, the land was barren, devoid of life.
We took years to enriched the soil, making it hospitable to plants.
Then we began to plant.
Today, our property is home to hundreds of fruit trees – everything from oranges and lemons and plums, apricots, peaches and cherries to bananas, mangoes, figs, grapes and avocados and many, many more.
It’s not just about growing food for ourselves, but about creating a thriving ecosystem.
The beauty of trees is that they keep on giving.
They provide fruit, shade, organic material, and habitats for insects, birds, and other animals, fostering biodiversity.
In planting these trees, I’ve reconnected with nature in a profound way.
It’s an experience that’s become addictive in the best possible sense – every new tree feels like a small victory for the planet.
