2008 – Kauai with Michele.

Kauai Adventures: Whales, Red Dirt, and Island Magic.

In early 2008, Michele invited me to her home in Kauai, and despite my aversion to long flights, I couldn’t resist.
Stepping off the plane, I was welcomed with flower garlands, the quintessential Hawaiian greeting, and found Michele waiting with a rented Jeep, which soon became my trusty island transport.

Michele’s home was everything you’d want a Hawaiian retreat to be – warm, inviting, and filled with laughter.
We spent endless hours hiking lush trails, sailing in turquoise waters, diving into the ocean, and talking about everything under the sun.

Yet, I also had time to explore solo, and I took full advantage. Kauai’s nature was a tapestry of greens so vivid they felt unreal, as if the island itself was pulsing with life.

My afternoons were often spent in tranquil meditation with the monks at a nearby Hindu temple, a peaceful ritual that somehow made the island feel even more magical.

One of the most unforgettable moments was a day we took a dinghy boat to see whales.
Suddenly, massive humpbacks breached right next to us, their powerful grace on full display.
We were so close that I could feel the splash, a surreal and humbling experience that left us both speechless.

Michele also introduced me to her “witch,” a gifted healer she had “adopted” by buying her a home, freeing her from financial worry so she could continue her work in peace.
Her quiet presence seemed to mirror the island’s own healing energy.

One afternoon, I visited the iconic Kauai Red Dirt T-Shirt factory, a brand born from pure resilience.
After Hurricane Iniki devastated the island in 1992, a screenprinting shop’s white shirts were all stained red from Kauai’s rich, iron-laden soil. Instead of throwing them out, the owners sold them as “souvenirs” of the hurricane, sparking a unique dyeing process that turned mishap into art.
Now, each shirt is dyed with this red dirt, resulting in a soft, earthy color that only gets richer with wear.

The food was unforgettable, the drives a little crazy (okay, maybe a lot crazy).
More than once, I tested the Jeep’s limits, ending up one time buried in sand on the beach, laughing until a friendly local helped dig me out.

It was a journey as colorful and wild as the island itself – an adventure filled with unexpected beauty, deeper friendships, and just the right touch of chaos.
