2024 – Cotswolds Trail – Day 5 – Sunshine & Stillness.

Finding Joy in the Little Things.

Day 5 – Cotswolds Trail – Dowdeswell to Birdlip – 21 km
They say after the rain comes the sun.
And today, the universe decided to gift me the perfect walking day.
Clear blue skies, a soft breeze, and just the right amount of warmth.
A far cry from yesterday’s mad dash through the woods to catch my taxi!
But today? Today, I took my time.

The adventure kicked off with a magical climb through Lineover Wood.
A forest so ancient it has seen Anglo-Saxon footsteps long before mine.
Sunlight filtered through towering trees, casting golden streaks on the mossy ground, and I half expected a woodland creature to pop out and start a conversation. (Sadly, no talking squirrels, but the birds put on quite the symphony.)

Emerging from the trees, I was met with a view so breathtaking it stopped me in my tracks.
Rolling hills stretched endlessly, an ocean of green and gold.
No camera could do it justice, and that’s when it struck me: life is just like this.
We’re so focused on the big milestones—promotions, weddings, grand adventures—that we often forget the tiny moments that truly make life magical.

Like the partner who bakes a cake just for you, despite their indifference to sugar.
Or the friend who writes you a poem at exactly the right moment. The perfectly brewed coffee waiting for you in the morning. The unexpected phone call from your daughter just when you needed it most.

So today, I made a conscious choice: to notice the little things.
Even when I found myself walking through yet another gorgeous forest—only to hear the distant hum of construction work.
I could have been annoyed. Instead, I tuned in to the way the sunlight danced on the leaves, the crisp scent of autumn, the wildflowers peeking shyly from the undergrowth.
I let joy win.
Even when I reached a busy roundabout (because what’s an epic journey without an epic road-crossing challenge?), I laughed at the contrast—one moment, lost in nature; the next, weaving through traffic like a high-stakes game of hopscotch.

Now, as I settle into my hotel for some well-earned rest, I feel lighter.
Today was a reminder that the best moments aren’t always loud or grand. They are quiet moments, tucked between the chaos, waiting for us to notice them.

Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
