A Father-Daughter Road Trip to Remember.
This was no ordinary road trip – it was a magical journey of connection, discovery, and celebration.
After our great week together in Tenerife earlier this year, Thom and I decided it was high time for a dedicated father-daughter adventure.
It took some time to lock in the perfect dates, but mid-September 2024 finally fit into Thom’s busy schedules, and we were off!
Day 1: Hitting the Road and Celebrating Milestones
We started in London, with Thom’s special “dad-approved” playlist setting the mood.
Jazz and songs from the 30s, 40s, 50s, and some mellow tunes from the 60s filled the car as we drove through the English countryside toward the Lake District.
Normally, I can’t handle music while driving, but this time was different – we talked, shared stories, sang along, and had a blast.
Navigating the roundabouts and narrow roads of quaint villages was a bit of a challenge, but Thom kept me in line with reminders to “STAY ON THE LEFT, DAD!”
After 7-8 hours of driving, we arrived at our cozy accommodation and headed out to the local pub for dinner and a surprise – to toast to a special milestone: Thom’s 10,000th day on this planet.
We clinked glasses of local cider and enjoyed an intimate night celebrating this unique moment.
Back at our place, we played card games until I couldn’t keep my eyes open and crashed for the night.
Day 2: Exploring the Lake District’s Natural Beauty
The next day, we were off to explore the breathtaking scenery of the Lake District.
We drove along winding (very) narrow roads, surrounded by lush green hills, dense forests, and sparkling streams.
Every turn seemed to reveal a hidden gem – a picturesque view or a secluded waterfall.
Our destination was the magnificent Aira Force Waterfall.
The hike through the woodland was mesmerizing, and we spent hours wandering around, captivated by the forest and the rushing streams.
After a lovely picnic lunch at the park entrance, we strolled down to Ullswater, where Thom dipped her toes in the icy lake water while we enjoyed the serene views.
Dinner that night was in the “big city” of Ambleside, where we enjoyed delicious food and meaningful conversation.
On our return “home,” Thom treated me to a “girls night” – complete with a cold face mask that left my skin feeling surprisingly refreshed!
Day 3: Adventures in Grizedale Forest and Poi Lessons by the Lake
We set out to explore Grizedale Forest on foot, hunting for hidden statues nestled among the trees and cliffs.
It felt like a treasure hunt, and we had a picnic lunch once we found the final sculpture.
Then it was off to Coniston Water, a peaceful lakeside spot where the afternoon sun created a perfect setting for relaxation.
There, Thom gave me my first poi spinning lesson.
Despite a few (okay, maybe more than a few) hits to the face, I found myself intrigued by this flow art and eager to learn more.
Dinner and another deep conversation in Ambleside wrapped up the day before our drive back “home.”
Day 4: A Long Drive Back and Deep Conversations
The drive back to London was long and tiring.
Thom wanted to tackle some heavier topics during the ride, and while the conversation was challenging, it brought us closer.
We arrived back in the city, returned the rental car, and shared a few underground stations before she headed off to celebrate Collette’s 28th birthday.
Day 5: Juggling and Camden Exploration
On our last day, I met up with Thom and Collette at Oddballs, Thom’s favorite juggling store in Camden.
It was a special moment – I picked up some new juggling balls, my first juggling rings, and even a set of poi to continue my practice.
We explored the vibrant market, sampled street food, and laughed as we shared a lunch on the stairs.
After lunch, we parted ways.
The girls left for more birthday activities, and I took some time to soak in the city’s energy (which I really didn’t like) before heading off to the airport.
The weather was a rare gift – sunny and warm throughout our trip, as if it had been ordered especially for us.
The moment I left, the rain returned, as if wrapping up the story of our journey with a perfect ending.
This road trip was more than just a father-daughter getaway.
It was a bonding experience filled with laughter, meaningful conversations, and a celebration of life’s little milestones.
It’s a memory I’ll cherish forever, captured in photos, videos, and, most importantly, in my heart.
