Mongol Rally Madness: Romania & Bulgaria (July 22-28, 2019).
Hold on tight for this 3-minute whirlwind through Romania and Bulgaria – starting with a blur of driving non-stop from the Czech Republic through Slovakia and Hungary.
We finally hit the Romania border at night after a long day on the road, and guess what?
The adventure’s just getting started!
First stop, a heartwarming dinner at Alex’s friends’ house – Romanian hospitality at its finest.
The next morning? Not your typical tourist experience…
We spent hours at his friend’s BMW garage, where the mechanics gave our trusty, but questionable, “Diana” a serious roadworthiness makeover.
The team at the garage got super hyped about our insane 20,000 km journey and peppered us with questions.
Then, we hit the road again, deeper into Romania.
We even paused to chat with some local cows (they didn’t have much to say).
After crossing one of many crazy bridges, we took a refreshing stop at a spring for some cold mountain water.
This led us into the stunning Transalpina Highway in the mountains – though the famous bears of the region decided to ghost us.
Local food was next on the menu.
We sampled some dishes we’d never seen before, and while the GoPro 3D camera got a front-row seat, it didn’t last long before it, like most things, broke off Diana.
At some point, we met up with Alex’s girlfriend for a cozy dinner before he left for her medical school graduation ceremony, leaving me with Diana to explore Romania solo.
I wandered around serene lakes and made some new donkey friends along the way!
Finally, it was time to say goodbye to Romania – one of my favorite countries in the Rally.
With final touches on Diana, we indulged in some epic breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and desserts in Bulgaria – finishing the clip in a hotel, one of the last luxuries before things get really wild.
And that’s Romania and Bulgaria – two more countries conquered in the madness that is the Mongol Rally!
